To conquer our adventure of the day we must rise early, as we will pick you up from your Cusco hotel after you have enjoyed breakfast (or may asked to have it in a box breakfast and enjoy it on the way). On the way, you will witness the impressive snowcapped peaks some comunnities working the lands and the amazing usual flora of this regions. After a ride of about 2.5 hours we will finally reach Mollepata (2803 mts/9196.2 ft) at this small town you will be able to purchase some last minute supplies and make the most of using the restrooms if needed.
As our program follows, we must head toward Soraypampa town (3920 mts/12860.9 ft) the start point of the Salkantay Trek and our start point of the day as well. Here we will begin our hike, on a steep path that leads to a panoramic view of the breathtaking snowcapped mountains and beautiful surroundings. While approaching the Salkantay or “Wild Mountain” (6271 mts/20574.2 ft) and the Humantay or “Head of the Gods” (5862 mts/19232.3 ft, from there we must walk for 1.5 hours until we reach Humantay Lake. If you are not feeling like walking, then there is the option to rent horses that goes to the Lake on the way up, please consult your travel specialist for further details.
This precious lake is very respectec and well cared by the community of that lives in Mollepata, since it’s the source for their water, basic for the agriculture of the area. Its formation was due to the melting ices of the Humantay snow peak and it has developed a unique turquoise and emerald color which is increase by the sun exposure.
Something that might cought your eye are the small towers of stone around the Lake, they are called “Apachetas” which are symbol of respect toward the lake and also the Apus (Guardian Spirits of the Mountains) that surrounded it. Once there you will have the chance to make an offering that includes Sacred Coca leafs, on the ceremony you pay respect to the Apus and thank for the accomplished hike safely.
